Alberta Teachers’ Job Action FAQ

Queen’s will be in Calgary at the TELUS Spark Centre on October 29th to cover all things related to our application process.  Queen’s will be participating in the Ontario Universities’ Information Sessions (OUIS).

If you are applying for a Major Admission Award that does not require a nomination, you can access the Major Admission Awards application in your SOLUS Student Centre. You will receive instructions for accessing SOLUS within 1 to 2 business days of applying for admission to Queen’s via the Ontario Universities’ Applicant Centre (OUAC). We encourage students to apply for admission via OUAC as soon as possible. The deadline to apply for a Queen’s Major Admission Award is December 8.

If your Major Admission Award application does require a nomination from your high school, please know that Queen’s is closely monitoring the job action. We’ll contact Alberta students who have applied to Queen’s with next steps if alternate arrangements are needed. In the meantime, we encourage you to access the Major Admission Awards application in your SOLUS Student Centre and begin preparing the other components of your application while waiting for further instructions about the nomination process. You will receive instructions for accessing SOLUS within 1 to 2 business days of applying for admission to Queen’s via the Ontario Universities’ Applicant Centre (OUAC). We encourage students to apply for admission via OUAC as soon as possible.

Yes! We will be hosting an event in Calgary on October 29. Queen’s will be participating in the Ontario Universities’ Information Sessions (OUIS).

You will apply for admission to Queen’s via the Ontario Universities’ Application Centre (OUAC).  We recommend applying as early as possible.  More information about how to apply to Queen’s is available on our website.

Yes. You can email us at recruit@queensu.ca, and we’ll connect you with a Recruitment Coordinator to arrange a time for a virtual meeting or a call.

Queen’s will not adjust grades for courses taken outside of your full-time day school, provided the courses are taken at a school that is inspected, accredited and approved by the Alberta Ministry of Education. Please ensure to send us your course enrolment and grades once they become available.

We recognize that the Alberta teachers’ job action may cause uncertainty for current high school students who are considering applying to post-secondary institutions this year. Please know that we are closely monitoring the progress of the job action to understand the best way forward. We are committed to supporting applicants during this time and will continue to communicate with students who have applied to Queen’s as the situation evolves.

If the Alberta teachers’ job action is preventing you from registering in a prerequisite course, we encourage you to contact us directly to discuss your specific situation, admission@queensu.ca.

We encourage students to apply early, complete the Financial Aid and Awards profile (if applicable), and begin Major Admission Award applications (if applicable) in their SOLUS Student Center.

If the Alberta teachers’ job action is causing a delay in issuing your grades, we still encourage you to submit your transcript or Detailed Academic Report (DAR).  So long as we can verify you are enrolled in the proper prerequisite courses, we will be able to move forward with considering your application, even if some of your grades are not available yet.

Yes, students can submit unofficial transcripts in support of their application to Queen’s.  If the Alberta teachers’ job action is impacting your ability to obtain an official transcript, we recommend downloading a copy of your Detailed Academic Report (DAR) from your and submitting that to Queen’s instead.

Official and unofficial transcripts, copies of your Detailed Academic Report (DAR), and other academic documents and results can be submitted to Queen’s using our .

All students who are conditionally admitted to Queen’s and accept an offer will be required to submit an official transcript over the summer before enrolling at Queen’s. 

Queen’s is closely monitoring the job action and will inform applicants of next steps should it become necessary to do so. 

Admission Updates

Concurrent Education (French)

Queen’s is now accepting direct entry applications into the Concurrent Education (French) program. This stream 
automatically dual-enrolls students in the Bachelor of Education program as well as a Bachelor of Arts (Honours) in French. This program is intended to prepare students to become French as a Second Language teachers at the Primary/Junior or 
Intermediate/Senior level. It is recommended that applicants have experience in an Extended French or French Immersion 
education environment.

Queen’s has permanently moved to a Test Optional model, meaning applicants who have studied in the US will no longer be required to submit an SAT or ACT score.  You may continue to submit your scores if you feel they will support your application.

  • Science: Advanced Functions 4U is no longer a required course. Two additional academic courses are now required.
  • Life Science: Biology 4U and Chemistry 4U are required courses. Advanced Functions 4U is no longer a required course. Two additional academic courses are now required.

You will either be a Group A or Group B applicant.

As an applicant to Queen’s, we also want you to remember our additional admission pathways that you may be eligible for, the First Generation Admission Pathway and the Indigenous Admission Pathway

We do not make alternate offers of admission- you must apply to every program you wish to be considered for, up to a maximum of 3 programs. It is possible to hold more than one offer of admission to the university, but you will only be able to accept one offer by the acceptance deadline.

Applications for admission to Queen’s are reviewed on a rolling basis and we make conditional offers of admission based on available grade information. This can include using grade 11 marks, when grade 12 marks are not yet available. This type of assessment depends upon students being registered in all required grade 12 courses. Therefore, it remains essential that you send Queen’s all course information, regardless of the semester model. 
Where courses are not available or scheduling conflicts arise, you should seek guidance and advice from your counselling/guidance office on an appropriate alternative.

If you are an Ontario student, be sure that your school has sent the OUAC all currently registered and projected course enrollments for the entire school year, regardless of the semester model.

If you are a student outside the province of Ontario, be sure that you have your high school send Queen’s all completed grade 11 coursework, currently registered and projected course enrollments for the entire grade 12 school year, regardless of the semester model. Transcripts can be sent electronically to: admission@queensu.ca

If you are a BC or Yukon student, be sure that you have correctly entered your Personal Education Number (PEN) on OUAC to ensure your grades are automatically transmitted.

If you are a CEGEP student, be sure that you have correctly entered your CEGEP Code on OUAC to ensure your grades are automatically transmitted.

For all other students, be sure that you have your high school send Queen’s all completed Grade 11 coursework, currently registered and projected course enrollment for the entire Grade 12 school year, regardless of semester model. Transcripts can be sent electronically to admdocs@queensu.ca.

High school grades are just one piece of information we use when making an admission decision. Each applicant to Queen’s has a unique To-Do List detailing exactly what we need to round out your application. Applicants can see their To-Do List (and the due dates) on their SOLUS Student Centre once they have applied. We review and update our supplementary requirements regularly to ensure applicants have a meaningful platform to share additional information not available through their grades.

Supplementary Information details

Whenever possible, we expect students will submit official documents in support of their application. However, if you are unable to submit official documents due to extenuating or exceptional circumstances will consider unofficial documents. International Student FAQ

Our English language requirements and the English language proficiency test scores that we accept can be found on our English language requirements page.

 

 

Students who are academically competitive for admission to a Queen’s undergraduate degree program but who do not meet the required admission standards for English language proficiency will be considered for QBridge. The QBridge program provides various routes to ensure that students are linguistically, academically and culturally prepared to complete their Queen’s undergraduate degree studies.

 

If you’re not a Canadian citizen or permanent resident and plan to study in Canada for more than six months, you will have to apply for a study permit. You should apply for your study permit online as soon as you get your acceptance letter.
