The sculpture “Pillars of Justice” by Edwina Sandys stands in front of the Superior Court of Justice in Toronto. The sculpture captures concretely, the fundamental idea of a fair, jury-based justice system.

Overview

Whether you’re in the process of entering the workforce or are an established legal professional, this course will help you to develop the oral and written communication skills required to meet the specific needs of a bilingual workplace. Students will increase their context-specific vocabulary and improve their reading and listening comprehension skills by working with authentic documents, such as court judgements, government documents, media accounts of legal cases, etc. Online exercises and written assignments will develop your ability to conduct everyday business activities in grammatically correct French. Conversational practice, role playing, and other collaborative activities will develop your oral communication skills so that you can effectively interact with French-speaking clients.

Learning Outcomes

After successfully completing this course, you will be able to:

  • Demonstrate that you have understood the meaning of texts, videos, and audio recordings in French;
  • Use context-specific French vocabulary appropriate for a French workplace;
  • Apply the rules of grammar at an intermediate level (as defined by the DELF-B2);
  • Express ideas clearly and coherently in oral and written communications in French;
  • Actively participate in a conversation in French on a topic of interest.

Additional Information

This course is intended for students who are able to communicate at an intermediate level in French (equivalent to DELF B1). This course is not intended for fluent French speakers. If you are uncertain of your level of French, we strongly recommend that you take the online Placement Test. Since the language-learning background of each student is unique, the French Placement Test is the French Studies Department’s best way of making sure you are in the course that best suits your current level.

This course credit does not apply towards a degree program in French Studies.
