Units across campus will host events for Teaching and Learning Month throughout May and into June.

As the campus gets a bit quieter this May, educators from across Queen’s will have opportunities to come together and engage in efforts to support student learning through the second annual Teaching and Learning Month. An initiative sponsored by the Office of the Vice-Provost, Teaching and Learning, the month brings together events organized by various faculties, schools, and support units to foster collaboration and provide a forum for discussing innovative practices across disciplinary lines. Events run in both May and June and are open to faculty, instructors, post-doctoral fellows, support staff, graduate teaching assistants, and others.

Teaching and Learning Month is also a chance to celebrate and grow Queen’s teaching and learning culture. By coming together across roles and disciplines, participants will not only share practical ideas but also hear about the creativity and commitment that sustain effective teaching across the Queen’s campus every day.

“Last year’s inaugural Teaching and Learning Month reaffirmed the strong interest across Queen’s in connecting beyond one’s own faculty or school to explore some of the most pressing challenges facing postsecondary educators today,” says Vice-Provost, Teaching and Learning, Gavan Watson. “I’m looking forward to seeing that collective energy again this May as we engage with a wide range of topics shaping teaching and learning today.”

Generative artificial intelligence (AI) will be one of the topics on the agenda in several sessions, including the keynote lecture, which will be delivered by Sarah Elaine Eaton, professor and research chair at the Werklund School of Education, University of Calgary and honorary associate professor at Deakin University, Australia. Dr. Eaton is an award-winning educator, researcher, and leader who leads transdisciplinary research teams focused on the ethical implications of advanced technology use in educational contexts.

Her talk for Teaching and Learning Month is titled “Shifting from Punitive to Pro-Active Approaches to Academic Integrity in the Age of AI” and will delve into the broad ethical and practical implications of AI for education. It will also explore how academic integrity provides a foundation for ethical decision making beyond the classroom, in the workplace, and in everyday life.

The Showcase of Teaching and Learning at Queen’s will be another highlight of the month. This day-long symposium features speakers from across the university and focuses on the theme “Risk, Reward, and Reflection.” Other events throughout the month include the Colloquium on Story and Narrative in Research hosted by the Faculty of Education and the Dean’s Showcase of Teaching and Learning in Engineering hosted by Smith Engineering.
