Most first-year students will be moving into campus residence buildings on Saturday, Aug. 30.
Approximately 4,800 incoming first-year students will soon be starting their Queen’s journey by moving into 18 campus residence buildings before classes start on Tuesday, Sept. 2. Most will be arriving on Saturday, Aug. 30.
“Move-in is a meaningful chance for the university community to welcome its newest members and help create a positive start for students, their families, and their supporters,” says Corinna Fitzgerald, Interim Vice-Provost and Dean of Student Affairs. “Once students are settled in their rooms, they can take part in orientation events that will help them adjust to life at Queen’s, introduce them to campus resources, and build connections with their new peers.”
Fall orientation events kick off Aug. 30 with Welcome Home Night activities, including tricolour crafts, a movie, and sports. Sunday morning then features the Tricolour Parade and Welcome, which brings the entire first-year class together to march down Union Street to Richardson Stadium, where they will hear from student leaders, learn the Oil Thigh, and enjoy a picnic lunch. After lunch, student-led faculty orientation events begin, giving students the chance to make connections with peers studying in the same faculty.
Move-in and orientation would not be possible without the immense support of student volunteers. More than 1,000 students volunteer to help move-in run smoothly, and more than 1,000 students also volunteer to help lead faculty orientation events.
Traffic for move-in
Housing and Ancillary Services in Queen’s Student Affairs has worked closely with the City of Kingston, Kingston Police, and traffic management specialists to help mitigate the impacts of increased traffic around campus through temporary road closures, traffic pattern changes, parking restrictions, and on-site staffing. Welcoming students and encouraging a safe start to the year
Queen’s is taking to social media to welcome new students with videos featuring upper-year students offering advice to their first-year peers. Student Affairs will also be using their social media channels over the coming weeks to reach new and returning students with messages that encourage safe and responsible behaviour and to share timely information about local bylaws.
